Darkest Dendrobium orchid?
We bought this orchid several years ago because of its very dark red purple color. It was so dark it almost looked black. It's very difficult to capture the true color of the flower so the photos are only a pale approximation of what it really looks like. It didn't bloom for a couple of years after we bought it. So last summer I placed it outdoors in dappled sunlight and voila it sent out two flower stalks with many blooms on each. The only problem with Dendrobiums is that it grows so tall it's difficult to keep in our portable greenhouse when the plant is indoors. Also unfortunate that the label is so illegible I can make out only Red Bull? Red Bul.?

These dark orchids, along with the dark columbine, are really cool looking, Ki. Dark purple iris are one of my weaknesses! The only trouble with such dramatic colors is that they're stunning up close, but almost invisible from a short distance... although that does add to the surprise factor.
Happy New Year from
Annie at the Transplantable Rose
Hi Annie, welcome back from your roadtrip. You're right, dark flowers are pretty invisible from a distance and it takes special placement to show them off. We just willynilly stick plants in the ground with just a moment of consideration so we end up having to dig them up later for a better placement. Part of the fun I guess. The C. atrata next to the yellow iris was pure serendipity. Who knew they would bloom at the same time and complement each other?
The lighting is exquisite on that second photo.

dfp,
I love the shadows cast by the orchid. Again a happy accident as I was looking to photograph the orchid in a raking light. I was trying to photograph it in a dimly lit situation to get as much color saturation as possible but it doesn't come close. The actual flower is much more bluish purple with the darkest parts almost black. Thanks for stopping by.
